The design, recipe, colour and shape should be carefully considered before ordering. The best way to choose what you would like is to look through books, magazines and websites and then look at the pictures of your cake artist’s work. Deciding can be simple (if you already know what you want) or quite nerve racking (if you have no idea), so having good communication with your cake artist is tantamount to getting it right on the day. Here are some things to consider before and during ordering your cake.
A. The Reason for your Cake
If you are using your wedding cake for the main dessert then this is something to consider with the size and type of cake to use. If you are planning to give a slice of the cake to your guests as a parting gift then the slices are usually smaller. However it is also known that if the cake is a heavier cake such as a fruit cake then the slice is also smaller than a sponge. You may also wish to keep the top layer of your cake for your first anniversary or the christening of your first child, to that end, obviously the cake is to be more than one tier in height.
B. The Theme and Colour Scheme of Your Wedding
You may wish to match the cake decorations with the bridesmaids dresses or your flower colours. Even still, many couples opt for themed weddings and a cake can be made to enhance a theme. While traditionally the wedding cake is iced in white fondant or royal icing, coloured icings are a popular option. You will need to take to your cake artist, samples and pictures of flowers, ribbons and fabrics if you intend to tie the cake in with the rest of your plans. Better still many clients bring in pictures of a particular style of cake they wish to be adapted for their wedding day.
C. Your Cake Decorations
Most wedding cakes are decorated with flowers made of icing or fresh flowers either of these need to be ordered in advanced please let us know. Cake toppers are very popular and a variety of these can be ordered to harmonize with your cake and wedding decorations. Monogrammed cake toppers are very popular today and can be handmade by your artist or custom made.
